Social determinants of identity in communities: A social capital- and social categorization-based approach – findings from Latvia

The article investigates the relations, in the light of new paradigms of economic development, between trust and economic wealth at the micro level in the Republic of Latvia, by means of a structural equation modelling-based approach and a framework combining social capital and social identity theory, in a rationale of cross-fertilization between social and cognitive science. In this chapter, we review identity development in German youth as well as the impact of German cultural history on difficulties in developing a sense of national identity. Current socioeconomic and political contexts, such as instability of labor markets and prolonged transitions to work and partnership, are likely to affect identity development. Identity development is particularly challenging for young adults from immigrant backgrounds, from low socioeconomic brackets, or who suffer from chronic health conditions. This article examines the explanatory capacity of Pierre Bourdieu's work in relation to social movements and, in particular, identity movements. It aims to provide a theoretical framework drawing on Bourdieu's central concepts of field, capital and habitus. These concepts are viewed as providing a theoretical toolkit that can be applied to convincingly explain aspects of social movements that social movement theories, such as political process theory, resource mobilization theory and framing, acknowledge, but are not able to explain within a single theoretical framework. Self and Identity Development during Adolescence across Cultures

The purpose is to show the dynamic of change and stability in the development of identity and self during adolescence. We present some basic differences between the development of self-perceptions and the development of identity according to Erikson's psychosocial formulation. The change and stability dynamics of identity development is subjected to critique from the perspective of the status paradigm as well as more recent theoretical models. The key role of the cultural context's inevitable influence on the development of identity and self-perceptions through the production of relevant cultural variations is also analyzed.

This paper offers the achievements and lacks of the studies on local power in the ancient Kingdom of Valencia during the XIXth century. The breakdown of the Ancien Regime by the liberal revolution is the point of departure. The process of social change started whith the revolution continued ever after the failure of the democratic experience thet begun at 1868. To discuss these topics (not always shared by spanish historians), it would be proposed the analysis of local cases during long-termed periods and a social approach to politics, specially referred to attitudes and action of lower social groups.

Interrelationships Among Identity Process, Content, and Structure: A Cross-Cultural Investigation

This study was designed to investigate hypothesized relationships among identity process, content, and structure with youth living in three different cultural contexts: the United States, Finland, and the Czech Republic. Results indicated that youth who used an informational identity processing style had well-structured identities that were rooted in personal self-elements. Youth who used a normative processing style also had well-consolidated identities but ones anchored in collective self-elements.
